XW2DX. From Laos through the moon. (Earth – Moon - Earth)

My friend and colleague in the hydrometeorological service Viktor Ivanov (UА3M) suggested that I try to communicate at 144 MHz via the moon (Earth - Moon - Earth). Victor is a person I know and respect. We lived for a whole year in the same dorm room, when we studied at the Polar Radio Operator Courses. I often remember those distant years of study. Our teachers were wonderful people, outstanding polar explorers. And the course of polar radio operators itself consisted of 50% of radio amateurs who came from all over the Soviet Union: (UA3M) Victor, (R7FO) Serge, (RA3MD) Andrey, (RZ1O) Sergey, (RB5CX) Igor, and many others. We were all very interesting to each other. Victor (UА3M) remained to work beyond the Arctic Circle. During this time that we did not see each other, he became a four-time champion of Russia in VHF and confirmed the standards of a master of sports.

I got a license to work only on HF bands so far, but I always want to listen to 144. I need to make an antenna. The ICOM-706 transceiver has 144 and 430 MHz. You can also try! The highest achievement on VHF is the connections made through the moon. A radio wave reflected from the surface of the moon can fly away not only to the other side of the Earth, but even to another galaxy. This is what radio astronomers do. And connections through the moon are called EME (Earth - Moon - Earth).

Laos has almost always clear skies. The full moon is simply amazing in its size.

I turned over a bunch of sites on VHF antennas. I looked through the easiest ones to make and decided to try to assemble them. My dipole on 20 m with a balun works great. Kaliningrad - 559, Japanese - 579. This is an excellent result!

Today, by chance, an idea came to my mind, and where there are most radio amateurs, and it turned out:  International Amateur Radio Union (IARU)».  http://www.n0hr.com/ham_radio_population.htm

1. Japan  1.296.059 (1.02% of the Japanese population);

2. USA  679,864 (0.209% of population);

3. Thailand   141 241;

4. South Korea   141,000;

5. Germany   79 666;

6. Taiwan    68 692;

7. Spain    58,700;

8.UK    58 426;

9. Canada   44,024;

10. Russia   38,000.

Laos is not even close on this list, and will not be in the near future.

What is the difference between Lao and Thais?

There are 141,241 radio amateurs in Thailand, and there are only 2 in Laos, one of them. This is still a big mystery to me. Anyway, there is one idea. There was a direction for the further movement of thought! It is necessary to register the radio club and the association of radio amateurs of Laos. Start teaching school children and students Morse code. We need to start developing the radio amateur movement. A little funny! XW2DX - I, a citizen of another country, am preparing the constituent documents for the registration of the Lao Radio Amateurs Union.

Is it funny?

It's funny to me too! I am in Laos and this is the present time.

And so, by chance, I came across Sakhalin's website: “Students of Gymnasium No. 1 of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk are establishing a communication session with the cosmonauts of the International Space Station. The radio amateurs of Sakhalin helped to establish radio communication with space. " And what do I see ?! All the faces I know! The radio amateur whom I knew 30 years ago, and now, "AHEAD OF THE ALL PLANET"! Konstantin Prokushev (RA0FW) is one of the organizers of radio communications with cosmonauts. I quickly found Kostya through his fellow radio amateurs. We talked a little. We remembered our youth. - Konstantin, I'm very happy for you!

I called Sushkov (RM0L) and said that an idea was born - I know where to start promoting the radio amateur movement in Laos. RM0L promised to help me arrange communication with the ISS. The University of Laos has a faculty of Russian language and literature. Why not try to hold a session of communication between students of the philological faculty with our cosmonauts ?!

  The process has started!

(Earth – Moon - Earth)

(Earth – Moon - Earth).

XW2DX. Laos. When does the broadcast come to life ?!

Sun, sun - all year round!

The energy of the sun permeates us from ears to heels. She participates in all natural processes. It charges the energy chakras of our body. Solar energy - the energy of life on earth - the energy of endless movement and youth!

Before I had time to write that there was no rain in Laos for a whole year, the rains "charged". For the second week now, the rain pleases us with coolness. We stopped turning on air conditioners and fans. The air temperature dropped to 28 degrees. This is the start of a new season!

For some reason, according to my observations, the radio broadcast is better when it is raining. I have not yet figured out what this may be related to. Right now, every morning turning on the transceiver, I immediately hear the live broadcast! Rain for Laos is like a new life! The earth is cooling. Nature revives. This year will be fruitful! Laos will not starve. Rain is rice, fruits, vegetables. Rain is life!

In Laos, for centuries, the sun heats water up to 25 degrees for free. Therefore, now, when the water flows from the tap is warm, there is no need to install a boiler. Many Lao people have never had a water heater because they use electricity mainly for night lighting. Maybe this is, in a way, good. Many Laotians become hardened from birth. They no longer need "warm" water, which we pamper our kids with! Electricity for an ordinary Lao is quite expensive. Part of the population has neither boilers, nor televisions, nor electrical appliances. Food is cooked on coals, on barbecue grills. If you put a frying pan in the sun, then you can fry eggs at least every day. The sun heats dark objects to such an extent that touching them is likely to cause serious burns.

Recently, the government of Laos has been developing alternative sources of electricity, which is chronically lacking anywhere. Namely: street lighting with solar collectors. Some streets are already fully equipped with such lighting systems. Ordinary hard workers can only dream about it.

For example, in Montenegro, we have been using solar collectors to illuminate the premises and the territory of the house for 20 years already. During this time, a huge amount of money has been saved on electricity alone. The same goes for solar collectors for heating water. They are not needed in Laos. Here, warm water flows through the pipes without it. We have a boiler in our house, but I try not to turn it on. Principle. I bought myself a solar-powered Chinese lantern. Humdinger. Chinese products are beginning to amaze with their increasing quality. All solar cell manufacturing is located in China. Today, every Lao can already shell out 80-100 dollars for a half-meter solar collector. The entire population of the country is constantly sending fans. It is precisely on such an inexpensive device that several fans can be hooked. During the day, as long as there is sun, all fans can be powered by solar energy. And in general, nature itself gave Laos huge opportunities and wealth, but due to reasons unknown to me, circumstances, ignorance of the situation, not understanding what is in their heads, I feel and see that people are not particularly concerned about this problem, and do not use it. that rightfully belongs to them.

The sun belongs to each of us.

You don't have to pay for it!

The sun, like air, is given from birth, like a set of diapers, for the rest of your life.

XW2DX. Laos - summer all year round!

All night long it rained like a bucket. Thunder peals were accompanied by lightning, blinding the dark sky. I didn't even turn on the transceiver. But today, since 6 am, the broadcast is completely different. Alive. Usually, after rain, there is always a good passage. I ran through the range. There are stations, but they are all at the noise level. The cluster shows American activity at 14019. Switched to dipole, which is directed to the northwest. There is activity, but it is very difficult to understand who is working. I got up on the frequency 14020, where there is the least interference. I gave a general call "CQ de XW2DX pse K" for several minutes. And in response, silence!

N4ET / DU7 calls for 14.021, 00.30 UTC. I answered him several times, but he did not hear. Moved from a dipole to a vertical. I called him a couple more times, and in response, silence ...

The weather is gorgeous now, in my opinion. The heat subsided these days. Cloudy for the second week. In Laos, as the Lao people themselves say, there are only two climatic seasons - summer and rainy season. There is no autumn or winter here. We spent a whole year under the scorching Laotian sun. It was the sun that made it impossible to function normally during the day. You can get tired of the sun too. That is why, from 12 to 14.00, all Laos falls asleep. Sometimes you go somewhere, and here, in front of you, there is a motorcyclist dressed in a black jacket, jeans and warm winter gloves. At first I thought it was some kind of discrepancy. Then I realized - this is protection from the sun. Although, why put on a black jacket, jeans and winter gloves - this does not fit in my head. There is only one explanation - so as not to freeze!

For example, the Koryaks in Kamchatka, in a frost of fifty degrees, put on reindeer suits. And here, in the fifty-degree heat, the Lao put on warm jackets, pants and winter gloves. An inexplicable phenomenon! As one friend of mine said, this is protection from the scorching sun so as not to burn out.

We want to be tanned, but why would the Lao people need it ?!

Laos - summer all year round!

XW2DX. Laos. Silence. Not a single connection ...

The morning begins with a melody that I set on the alarm clock. It takes me 10 minutes to make coffee. I turn on the transceiver and run through the range looking for any signals I have. The Russians have such a concept: "Deaf, as in a tank." This is how I will remember the Lao broadcast. At 6.10 - silence! I go to DXFUN CLUSTER. Watching 14 MHz. In the mornings, the passage to America is shown on the cluster. I get on the frequency where the QSO just passed. I'm listening. I listen. I am changing the antenna. "Deaf, as in a tank"! No passing. I still have half an hour to sketch the next blog post.

The night was amazing! Silence is "deathly"! Even the dogs, as usual at 5 am, did not howl. A flock of monkeys, like a herd of elephants, did not run across the roof. The rats in the attic didn't play football. In the morning, the sound of the gong was not heard. The monks were silent. Did something happen that made me feel stressed ?! This is very rare in Laos.

A sip of hot, bitter, Lao coffee. My preferences. This scent ?! The coffee bushes that I brought from Pakse a year ago are already grown up and are pleasing to the eyes!

The first sounds of the ether. As on waves, distant signals begin to appear. 14.010, JT1AA gives a general call, 00.06 UTC. I have been sitting "on him" for 15 minutes and he cannot hear me in any way. Most likely, his antenna is turned towards America. And to me he is an "asshole". Therefore, I hear him at 589, but he does not. Today I will try to lower the dipole and put the “BALUN” matching device on it. I listen to 14.020. Gave a general call for several minutes. Silence. Today I will again have to climb the tree from which I recently fell. The balun, which I already placed on the vertical antenna, added 1 point to the receiver sensitivity. Most likely, the power in the antenna also increased by about 5 watts. These are my assumptions. I am here without instruments.

Half an hour ago, a passage was supposed to open. But ... "dull, like in a tank"!

One thought stuck in my head.

Why didn't the dogs howl this morning?

In fact, in Laos, this is an actual problem. There are a lot of stray dogs. In every yard, both behind the fence and in free flight, there are 2-3 lured dogs. Often in the evenings, when we go to the store, it is dangerous to go out into the street. Local dogs rush to strangers. I can't even let my daughter go to school alone. They had scared her a couple of times. Afraid of dogs. Lao dogs are unpredictable. A year ago, when we first arrived here, all the dogs attacked me every day. Of course, according to the old "fighting" habit, I immediately made myself an "armor-piercing" slingshot. Everyday. In the morning and in the evening. For half a year, I shot all the local dogs that came my way. Time has passed. Now, when we are walking somewhere along the street, all the dogs seeing us, already 100 meters away, run away from "sin away". In a strange monastery, as they say, do not go with “your charter”! But this mess, which is happening on the streets of the city, does not interfere with the local population. They live with it all their lives. Dogs howl, bark, gnaw. Nobody cares about this. Nobody is going to solve this problem, as with stray cats climbing everywhere. She is simply NOT here! These are all "temporary difficulties" ...

In Vientiane, homeless people or thieves often wander at night. At night they will carry away everything that "lies badly". Thieves climb around yards and, of course, the best medicine to scare them away is lured dogs. All the thieves and vagrants were asleep tonight. The dogs also slept peacefully.

8.00 am. I finished my already cold coffee. The last sip, in which grains of ground coffee. The ether never "opened". A large amount of extraneous interference and signals appeared. At DXFUN CLUSTERe only at 14.074 FT8 there is movement. The rest of the broadcast is silent.

9.00. It's time to get ready for work.

Not a single connection ...

XW2DX. Laos. The road back to the future.

All night long I moaned in my sleep. This nightmare has been going on for the second week. This is a kind of payment for my love of radio. Retribution for years of dedication to the amateur radio movement. Although, in fact, everything is corny and simple! On this day, there was a flash in the sun. At that moment I was already on the tree and tried to hook the antenna extension. Everything coincided in a split second. The branch broke from the impact of the sun wave on the ground, and I, went-e-e-kicked down.

Broken ribs slowly grow together, as the ribcage is always in a mobile state. The main thing is that it is difficult to find a place for yourself in a lying position. Body weight still puts pressure on the "fresh" injury. Whichever side you try to roll over, the feeling is that an elephant has stepped on you. You can't take a deep breath. And if you wanted to sneeze, it’s like a lightning strike, passing through the whole body with acute pain.

In the morning, very slowly, like a boa constrictor, like a slug, like an amoeba, I have to flow from the bed to the floor and get to my feet. With the feeling that you have a "knife in your side", limp to the kitchen, where you can make coffee for yourself. From this moment on, life is reset.

And so, every morning.

Last night we watched the film “Temporary Difficulties”. The film inspired and upset me. I thought: - "There are no unsolvable problems." It's just that not every one of us is ready, day after day, for 15 years, to give all of ourselves, part of our soul, - to that idea, that work, in which one must fanatically believe in order to change the situation for the better. To overcome myself and the "Temporary Difficulties" that have lasted for years. This takes ONLY 15 years!

In November, I had a work trip planned to the South of Laos. From Vientiane to Pakse is only 700 km. Previously, I could travel this distance by car in 10 hours. But here I knew neither the area nor the road. Of course, the easiest way was to get on a plane and fly to Pakse. But, I have never looked for easy ways. I always wanted to see everything with my own eyes. My friend Viengxay and I decided to take a bus to Pakse. It was hoped that part of the way I would look out the window and admire nature. Viengxay offered to take recumbent places. Drive all night. Let's get some sleep. When the bus started, the lights were turned off. After 15 minutes we left Vientiane and ... "fell into a black hole" ...

Earlier, in my student years, I had to travel by bus all the time. All the way you look out the window. Half asleep. Half-lit half-stations, villages, cities sweep by. And you always go somewhere and go. Shebekino-Belgorod. Then a little further. Shebekino-Voronezh. Then: Shebekino-Moscow, Shebekino-Petropavlovsk Kamchatsky, Ossora, Tilichiki, Vladivostok. And off we go! Paris, Ljubljana, Milan, Sarajevo, Skoplje, Thessaloniki, Tirana, Budva, Trebinje, Mostar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Pretoria, Cape Town, Novolazarevskaya Antarctic Station ... Mirny Observatory, it was already impossible to stop! And then, a rapidly approaching economic crisis, sucking Europe into the swamp.

Mirny Observatory
Mirny Observatory

Yes, this economic crisis began in Europe 10 years ago. His stale breath has been felt everywhere in recent years. I was again consumed by the thought that I need to bring down from Montenegro where there is work, where there is movement and development. The Montenegrin soap bubble, with its real estate and investment projects, began to deflate very quickly. In Montenegro itself, besides the clean sea and clean ecology, there are no natural resources. And most importantly, there is no desire to strike "finger on finger" in the plans for the next five years to bring the country out of the state of prolonged suspended animation. The "golden rain" passed quickly. Parasitism on the body of decaying Europe, sooner or later, had to end. The prayer for the repose of the soul was already in the air! We started liquidating our companies and disposing of unnecessary assets.

Studying the world economy, I came to understand that it is Asia that is developing at a rapid pace. China, Vietnam, Thailand. I am not even talking about highly developed countries such as Singapore, Brunei, Malaysia, which already in the 90s showed the best rates of economic development. To "enter" Asia, huge capital is needed. Since 2016, we have begun to carefully study and study the Asian market. What is there and what is not. My personal opinion was that it was necessary to "enter" from Laos. He is closer in mentality to the Soviet Union. More than 50,000 people were educated in the USSR and speak Russian. Naturally, Laos had to first be seen with your own eyes.

There were many different ideas. I wrote over 30 business plans that have remained on paper. They had nothing to do with real life in Laos. By this time, I was already a representative of a nano-biotechnology company.

All ingenious is simple! A person cannot but eat! Each of us should go to the toilet "in a big way" at least once a day. Believe me, not every one of us wants and will be able to deal with other people's "poop". It was this topic that made me deeply begin to study the issue of sewage and wastewater treatment systems. Study the latest purification technologies using live bacteria. It is this problem that has not yet been resolved in many Asian countries. It was in this direction that our entire corporate program was built. The goal was not only to enter the Asian market, but also to find your place in the sun. As it turned out, in Laos, the problem with cleaning the sewage system, as it was 50 years ago, remained unresolved. Today it is not only the problem of Laos, but also of all the states bordering on Laos. Health loves cleanliness. Nature does not forgive uncleanliness. Sooner or later, all this accumulated dirt will become an environmental bomb that, like Covid 19, will lead Asia to collapse, stagnation and coma. And it can lead to disaster.

I didn't sleep all night. State, as if you are wriggling "already on a hot frying pan." The whole road was shaking so much that only in the morning, when we approached Pakse, and the road became a little better, I fell into catalepsy, and did not feel anything. Bad roads, like fools, are everywhere. Laos is exactly the place where road issues have only started to be addressed in the last 5-10 years. Even inside Vientiane, the entire road surface is patched, corroded by rain, broken by a huge stream of road traffic. In this situation, for some people, hopes for a civilized life are destroyed. If bad roads are a “disease,” then there must be good cars for such roads. That is why today all of Laos drives pick-up trucks that are not afraid of bad roads!

But all these are "TIME DIFFICULTIES"!

In 15 years, the entire transport infrastructure will be under China. All roads will belong to China. All roads will start and end in China.

How is black coffee related to my hobby for radio?

Every morning, before turning on the transceiver and hearing the sound of the air, I brew myself a large cup of Lao black coffee. The unique smell and its amazing taste give me a sense of joy and enjoyment of life. Earlier, in the Balkans, together with a cup of coffee, I could afford to smoke one cigarette. What can't you do for your own pleasure! It is always very hot in Laos, so this habit has disappeared by itself.

What did I know about Lao coffee?

Nothing!

I remember my student years well. Usually, preparing for exams, you re-read the material you have passed for several days and nights. It was then that I first tried instant coffee. During the Soviet era, we had no choice of coffee. Perhaps there was green ground coffee that needed to be roasted. I do not remember! My parents and we drank tea as children. Therefore, we did not know the taste of real coffee. Then, for some reason, it seemed to me that this soluble poison was destroying my liver and I stopped drinking it.

Having lived for some time in the Balkans, I got into the habit of drinking Turkish coffee.

Why was it called that?

This ground, roasted coffee was brewed in a metal turkey with a narrowed neck. All the Balkan peoples call this coffee "turska kafa". Coming to Sarajevo, I always drank several cups of aromatic coffee. Enjoyed the Turkish bazaar at Bar Charshiya. I walked the streets of the Old City of Sarajevo. It was there that I first saw how real, insoluble coffee was roasted and prepared. The smell of coffee cannot be compared or confused with anything. In any Balkan organization, wherever you go, it is good practice to treat the person to a cup of instant coffee. And if you are visiting or on a holiday, then coffee and rakia are the main ingredients for meeting guests.

Working at one time in the United Arab Emirates, my partners and I went to a camel farm in Oman. I remember the Bedouins made us coffee with the addition of ginger and cardamom. It was a yellow drink with a particularly pleasant taste. These drinks are served to guests as a sign of respect.

We used to think all the time that coffee only grows in Brazil. But once in Laos, I wanted to deeply study this issue. Primary sources indicate that the first to know and use coffee were Ethiopians. They were the ones who learned how to make coffee drinks.

More than 500 billion cups of coffee are consumed worldwide every year. The largest coffee lovers, in terms of its consumption per capita per year, are the Nordic countries: Finland, Norway, Iceland.

Growth in coffee consumption in developing countries is the main driver of price increases. The economic crisis has increased the demand for coffee in exporting countries by 40%. According to the International Coffee Organization, in 2019, global coffee production increased by 10%. During the onset of the global crisis, people began to drink more coffee.

Laos is one of the places on the planet where coffee is not only grown but also enjoyed with pleasure. I tasted all brands of local producers. Excellent taste and smell. Holding coffee beans in your palm, you feel the power of nature, which she gives to everyone who wants to feel the taste for life.

Last year, even before the outbreak of the virus pandemic, my friend Viengsay and I went to a business meeting in the South of Laos in the city of Pakse. This is the world famous highland plateau of Bolaven on the border with Thailand and Cambodia. Beautiful nature. Amazing people. Alpine climate. The pine-scented air reminded me of Herzegovina, which I love very much. We visited several coffee plantations. We drank coffee. We went on an excursion to the waterfalls. We were at a business meeting at one of the largest factories "Dao" for the processing of coffee and the production of various coffee products. We visited the world famous historical complex Wat Phu. There is a dilapidated Khmer temple. UNESCO has added this place to the list of protected World Cultural Heritage sites.

I brought coffee samples and coffee plants with me to Vientiane. During this year, my coffee has grown by half a meter and makes me happy every day. I guess I'll come back to Pakse someday. I want to stay there and live forever! There are no radio amateurs in Pakse. Maybe I will be the only DX who will represent coffee Laos.

Coffee is not just a business. Coffee is love! Coffee is Southern Laos!

I am preparing a small material about interesting places in Laos, which we have already visited.

To be continued.

XW2DX. Where you were born, there you came in handy!

August this year will be phenomenal! In August 5 Saturdays, 5 Sundays and 5 Mondays. This happens once every 823 years. The Chinese call this phenomenon "a bag full of money"!

Joy to life distinguishes Lao from other peoples of the world. Today I want to talk about food and food products. We can't help but eat. We are always hungry. Food is the enjoyment of life!

One part of the working-age population of Laos works in the civil service.

The second part of the population can be divided into several more groups:

 - workers-sellers in markets, traders,

 - working at home.

Entire neighborhoods of Vientiane live off tailors and cutters, whose workplace is part of their home, in which they live with their families. They all try on and sew from morning to night. There are small children next to them, growing up, playing with threads and bobbins.

All Lao people have ridden and ride motorcycles since childhood. From infancy, children are transported in this way. Many Lao people are well versed in technology. They disassemble, repair, service motorcycles on their own. There are motorcycle maintenance services in the city at every step. By chance I managed to spy, a neighbor's woman, in front of my eyes, took off the rear wheel herself, twisted it, knocked, and put back her "clunker". Cool!

Laos is an agricultural country. A large number of workers are employed in agriculture. Many agricultural enterprises do not have mechanization, so all work is mainly done by hand. It's hard work - squeezing rice all day long in a 40-degree heat. Rice and fruits are the main agricultural products of Laos. The government has no money to buy fertilizers. Therefore, all agricultural products supplied to the domestic market are environmentally friendly. Dairy and beef farming is underdeveloped. There is no own milk here, it and meat are imported from Thailand, where it is 2 times cheaper.

A separate topic is markets, retail outlets and street trading. There are a lot of markets, outlets with street food in Vientiane. The markets are always fresh agricultural products. Due to the heat, it is not possible to store food for a long time. Every day fresh vegetables, fruits, salads, fish, poultry meat are brought to the markets. In the Lao market, you need to bargain, otherwise a foreigner will be "snatched" by products at an inflated price. We, foreigners, are clearly visible from afar. During this time of living in Laos, I only buy products from regular suppliers. Trust in the sellers has developed. They already remember me, give discounts.

Everywhere, in all markets, there are women with babies. Often, when a child is born, there is no one to leave him with. A woman has to create conditions, right at the workplace, for the child to be with her. A baby bed with barriers is installed for the child and the child is always in the market next to the mother.

All Lao people love to eat well. But any food costs money. Good food costs a lot of money. Not every Lao has enough monthly budget to eat and drink for 3 days ?! So someone still has money! In Laos, food is not very expensive. If you eat like ordinary Lao people who eat in common food places all their lives, then the daily budget for one person will be about $ 10.

What is included in this amount?

Usually in the morning, for breakfast, a Lao eats a large bowl of noodle soup with salads - $ 1, juice, tea, water - $ 0.5. Lunch consists of a large portion of rice, with a huge amount of different salads, spices, broth - $ 3. In the evening, eat rice, sweets, drink beer and this is about $ 5. Therefore, it is possible to squeeze out and eat normally for an ordinary person who receives a monthly salary of $ 300 without any problems. Many rice dishes are quite varied and inexpensive. A huge role in the food culture is played by a variety of papaya, mango, spicy Korean salads, etc., which cost nothing. Grass, leaves, stems, roots, fruits, with different taste, smell and color, improve digestion. Lao people are mostly vegetarians, although they love meat very much.

We, too, at the very beginning, when we arrived in Laos, selectively bought some products in the market, for fear of catching an intestinal infection. Therefore, all products were first bought in a supermarket, where prices are 2 times higher than in the market. Over time, we found places - markets and fast food outlets, where prices are lower and the quality is not worse than in supermarkets. Until today, there has not been a single case when we and our children got poisoned or got sick with an intestinal infection.

Several months ago, returning home, I saw two Lao pensioners in a cafe. Merry, they sang in karaoke. We drank beer. The large table was filled with food.

Interestingly, I thought, even pensioners keep up with the youth. Songs, beer and food are everywhere. All Lao people love to eat a lot. They constantly chew something, and most importantly, they constantly drink.

Appetizing scents envelop the whole Vientiane from early morning until late at night.

People wake up and immediately start cooking and eating. We in Europe are used to starting the morning with a cup of coffee. That is, in the morning I never gorged, because the brain works better on an empty stomach. In Laos, the opposite is true. Morning breakfast is both lunch and dinner. They don't really need to strain their brains. Everything was decided for them and there was no need to think about anything. The people are happy. No hungry. Everything is in business. Everything in their life is good. This means that the People's Revolutionary Party is following the right path!

He who works well eats a lot!

Here are some statistics on who is how much and who weighs how much.

Studies have shown that in most Asian countries, people are on average lighter than those in the West. This is understandable, because the Western style of eating is the most harmful and contributes to the development of obesity more than others. Since rice is the main food crop in Asia, the level of obesity is significantly lower here. On average, 150 grams / day or more per person comes out. This association suggests that the prevalence of obesity is low in countries where rice is consumed as a staple food.

According to my observations: in Laos there are several times less fat people than in Thailand. Before the pandemic, we constantly traveled to Thailand and of course there are more overweight people there.

My forecast for Laos for 2020-2021 is as follows.

Even now, due to the shortage of a large number of manufactured goods that Laos has imported, the state and people do not have much difficulty with food. More than a year will pass when the price of common products starts to rise. Today, during the period of isolation and pandemic, I can say that the price per 1 kg for certain seasonal food products has fallen, and these are: rice - $ 0.7, mango - $ 0.6, pineapple - $ 0.5, passion fruit - $ 0.5, apples - $ 0.5, corn - $ 0.4, bananas - $ 0.5, parsley, green onions, dill - all for $ 0.1, tomatoes - $ 0.5, cucumbers - $ 0.3.

The price of permanent (popular) products, such as steakyris - $ 1, beer - $ 0.9, flour - $ 0.5, etc., will remain unchanged throughout the year. Only for imports, which are dairy products and meat, prices have gone up since the start of the global crisis. The market will shift in a year if the production of products is less than consumer demand or there is a dry period. All food prices will slowly grow imperceptibly and will not hit the budget of the country's population.

Overproduction of agricultural products is evident today. Therefore, its cost is lower than the world market price for food
Overproduction of agricultural products is evident today. Therefore, its cost is lower than the world market price for food

Small inflation during the year and the rise in prices for all goods, people will not even feel. The growth of the gross product during the crisis, today, is even higher than before it. There is an oversupply of some agricultural products. Bottom line: famine does not threaten the Lao people. The only factor that can cause a rise in prices and bring down the food market may be hunger in neighboring countries of Laos, such as India or China. When export prices rise and most of the agricultural products will flow abroad. But this will not happen in the coming years.

Residents of Laos, sleep well! There will be no hunger!

If you have worked well all week, then of course you are tired. Play karaoke, buy a few cases of beer, invite your friends and have fun. Don't think about anything! Everything will be fine in Laos!

To be continued.

XW2DX. Laos lives in "infinity"!

The soul is immortal, therefore human life is priceless ...

This Buddhist philosophy is very important from the point of view of understanding all the processes taking place, both inside Laos and in the surrounding world.

How quickly decisions are made at certain points, and what factors influence this process?

It is with these questions that you come across when you cannot understand why the movement towards your own development is at the level of the speed of movement of the snail. For example, in Montenegro, making a decision is often postponed until tomorrow, because it takes time to make a decision to think it over. It is for this that Montenegrins are called lazy, although this is not so. Laziness cannot be called the thought process of analyzing a situation. It is the delayed decision making that can least of all harm the work, avoid unforeseen losses and risks. It often happens that it is during this delayed period that the correct solution to a given task or problem comes. In this I completely agree with the Montenegrins. Therefore, the word "tomorrow" does not mean that this will never happen! It literally means that you need to think carefully.

There are no unresolved problems in Laos. In Laos, every day, at meetings and planning meetings, tasks are set that are prescribed in all documents by the leading Lao People's Revolutionary Party. It is they who govern the strategy for the development of society and the state. I remember our Soviet Union well. Every morning we had a planning meeting. The workers were reminded of the goals and objectives of the movement towards developed socialism and communism.

Well, was that bad?

Imagine - a mother of two small children, schoolchildren. Waking up at 6.00 in the morning, she had to: take off her dry clothes, cook breakfast, prepare clothes, socks, wipe shoes for schoolchildren. Prepare clothes for her husband, a tie, a list of things to buy after work ... Wake up, wash, dress, feed and send the children to school. Feed your husband and send him to work. Then, dress yourself, comb your hair, put on makeup, “grab” something on the move, and run out of the house “like a bullet”. Run to the bus stop. Squeeze into a crowded, like her, bus, remembering on the go what she missed to do. Crumpled and sweaty, pushing others around with her elbows, jump out of the bus, run to the checkpoint of the plant so as not to be late and not get another reprimand. And, only after passing the checkpoint of the plant, exhale, and entering the shop, begin to recover from the cycle of everyday events. This example is memories from my childhood.

Well, how can such a worker immediately remember what he needs to do in the workplace, and what are the plans of the party and the government for this day, on the path of movement towards developed socialism?

Life was different. Of course, we all went through these situations to some extent. The understanding of the general process of the cycle of events was imprinted in the memory. We were all in a hurry to live and there was not enough time for everything. Often, the rush itself did not lead to the desired result. Here, in Laos, some decisions are made, it seems to me, at a philosophical level. The time for making decisions is not limited by the time itself ... That is, a Montenegrin need only 1-2 days to make a decision, while a Lao needs 20 days or more.

I still can't figure out why?

Apparently, I had to be born in Laos to understand this!

We have a different frame of reference with them. Different system of world order. Different history and religion. Going back to the beginning of this post. We all try to do something in our short life, so the time for making decisions, most often, is limited. It is impossible to endlessly ponder and grind some questions that tomorrow will lose their meaning and relevance.

Laos lives exponentially, that is, in infinity. There is such a mathematical component. Therefore, the expression: "Time is money" - does not make any sense here!

To be continued.

XW2DX. In 15 years we will all be DX - s!

Yesterday I wrote a piece called "Laos is different!" Nature heard me and gave me a sign that I was wrong. And now for the second day in Vientiane it is pouring rain. There was a thunderstorm at night, and the sun did not come out in the morning. The gray sky touched my vertical antenna, which is made of bamboo sticks. The wet bamboo under the weight of the stretch marks bent like a bow, shooting my modest "miniwatts" into the orphaned ether. I was left in Laos alone, "all alone "!

Where are you Lao radio amateurs, which one, two, and miscalculated?

What's happening?

Imagine that an abnormal situation has occurred. All power plants in the world, all local substations that generate electricity, are out of order. The planet was left without "light". Everything stopped. Nothing works. Communications do not work, pumps for water supply do not work, gas stations do not work, refrigerators do not work ... And most importantly, telephones and the Internet do not work. This is a collapse. It's an ass! Most likely, each of us has already experienced such a state when, for some reason, the electricity was cut off for several hours. Usually, people go out into the courtyard and, together with their neighbors, begin to discuss what is happening, "wash the bones" to the neighbor, the mayor of the city, and then to the president. There is no more "OK" or "fb" - N.O.T.H.I.N.G! There is only hope that all this will soon pass and return to our usual course. It won't work. The world around us has turned upside down!

What will happen next?

Most importantly, no one knows what happened and there is no one to ask. Previously, each apartment had a wired radio and the working day began with the song “Where does the Motherland Begin”, followed by news reports. This is nothing else! Even nostalgia for those times, gradually, like an internal pain, passed over the years.

It's good that I, like millions of other people, use a gas stove, and immediately brewed coffee for myself so that, while enjoying its smell, not to think about bad things. But there has been no electricity for a whole day and night will come soon. If you do not have a gas generator in your garage, you will have to use a regular battery from the car to quickly distribute electrical wiring around the house and connect 12 volt bulbs. Wipe off dust and connect Icom-706, hook on the antenna and try to listen to the broadcast. This will be done by millions of radio amateurs who have experienced similar situations quite often. It is the radio amateurs, from the perspective of the civilian population, who are the first to provide communication during emergencies.

The apocalypse is coming!

What do you need to be prepared for?

Many wealthy people, especially in America, have already prepared by setting up underground bunkers in case of nuclear war. For the military, this infrastructure has always functioned flawlessly, and they spent part of their life, part of their service exactly there, in the bunker, where there are all the necessary communications.

It may seem strange why I have touched on this particular topic - the theme of the apocalypse. I don’t exaggerate. We, radio amateurs, are getting smaller and smaller every year. In 15 years there will be very few of us. We will all, for each other, become DX-s! In 5 years, humanity is waiting for a technological breakthrough and radio communication, as such, will become a thing of the past. We are all used to living in civilization. We are used to infrastructure. None of us can even think that we will have to run to an abandoned toilet, made of planks, and blown by a howling wind, because there is no water in the toilet, because there is no light, because no one understands that happens and there is no one to ask about it!

In Laos, Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam, Africa - until now, millions of people have been living in similar conditions for the last hundred years. They live, enjoy life, give birth to children, and do not know at what level of development people in other countries are. They do not have a wired radio in which the song "Where the Motherland Begins" sounds in the morning. There is not even an ordinary light bulb in their cardboard house covered with palm leaves. They don't know that some people have underground bunkers in case of nuclear war.

Yes, and why should they think about it?

They are happy because they don't know that when the electricity goes out, life stops indefinitely!

We are accustomed to civilization, we have accustomed our children to technological toys. Phones have replaced books, games, live communication. We isolated ourselves from the world around us. The world around us is beautiful! Better to see once! Just in Laos, I saw it with my own eyes. The conditions in which most of the population lives are in nature, in harmony with their understanding of their own development. People still cook on coals and sleep on the floor. But every kid has a mobile phone in his hands as a toy. Gadgets have captured and control the minds of children, the minds of people. Gadgets have replaced live communication with the outside world.

Today, every sane person decides for himself whether he wants to go further, in step with techno-civilization, or stay in his world, stay in his time.

XW2DX. It's different in Laos.

A squall wind and an impending thunderstorm sweep away everything in its path, raising columns of dust, debris and dry leaves. Packages, like paratroopers, soar upward and disappear in the arms of the blue sky. If the storm has caught you off guard, then it is better to have time to find a secluded spot. This "tsunami" of the oncoming torrential rain will not leave you dry.

I've always loved the storm! This natural strength inspired me and made me be careful. Be prepared for unpredictable developments.

Lao people said it was rainy season. It will rain every day, but the rains never started. We have lived in Montenegro for many years and imagine what the rainy seasons are like. This is not a pleasant time. Usually, it starts to rain in the 20th of November and ends at the end of January. For almost two and a half months, it rains incessantly. The sky is pouring out a sea of water. It rains both day and night, continuously for two to three weeks. Then it calms down for a few days. The joyful sun peeps out and again precipitation with a cold snap by December. Sometimes even snow covers the ground with a white blanket and melts quickly. By the New Year and Christmas, all residents crawl to the tree, installed in the center of Herceg Novi, already drunk in the ass. People get depressed. Usually during this period undiagnosed chronic diseases emerge. Rakia, Turkish coffee and sea view, on a sunny day, is the best antidepressant.

The fungus covers the damp walls of apartments, houses, buildings. It smells damp everywhere. Cities take on a dark color. From a bird's eye view, it seems that the whole of Montenegro has turned black with moisture. Then this smell is replaced by the smell of freshness. Green shrubs release tassels of flowers, transforming cities into fragrant, colorful gardens. When the rain stops, the smells of flowers envelop the mind, and the intoxicating sensations of the multitude of iridescent rays of the sun, enter the body into a coma. The sun that came out for several days disperses the air, increasing the feeling of joy and renewal of life. It is at these moments that people feel happy. There comes a state of enjoying life with an unconscious understanding that you are somewhere. Every day the sun regains its place in the sky, and when mimosa blooms, a holiday begins in Montenegro! Spring Festival! Mimosa holiday! A holiday of life!

It's different in Laos.

Going outside during the day for a few minutes, the whole body is covered with sweat. It flows down in streams. You have to change 2-3 shirts per day. The state is such that it is as if you are entering a steam room. I left the house for a few minutes, steamed, "washed" then and again home, under the conditioner. All this year of our life in Laos, it is in this state that we arrive.

All government and commercial institutions use air conditioners. Air conditioners are everywhere. Air conditioning service is a good, profitable, well-established business. But most of the population cannot afford to have an air conditioner, as it cannot afford it. Expensive electricity. And not every Lao family can shell out $ 100-150 a month for air conditioning alone. Therefore, ordinary fans are common in Laos. They are everywhere. Fans push air from corner to corner, thereby creating an oxygen flow that is not enough during the scorching heat. For centuries, Lao people have adapted to live in such conditions and this does not bother them too much.

When it starts raining, everyone is happy! We also enjoy the rain! Rain is salvation from the brightly scorching sun. Rain is a long-awaited coolness and good mood for the future!

Life goes on! It's only the beginning...
